Friend of mine bought a 68 Charger. We pulled the chunk to check the gears and take a look at the axel bearings. Everything looked good so we put the chunk back and slid the driver side axel back in. But the passenger side axel would not go all the way back. It liked about a 1/4 inch. We loosened the driver side axel and pulled it back. Now the passenger side goes all the way in but the drivers side likes about 1/4 inch going in. With both sides loose, which ever axel you push in causes the other to push out. What is going on?
perhaps this will help...1. clean axle shaft flange face and install new gasket followed by the brake support plate on the left side of the axle housing. 2. Install foam gasket on studs of the housing and slide shafts through the seal and engage splines in differential side gear. 3. Tap end of the axle shaft lightly with a plastic mallet to posistion axle shaft bearing in housing bearing bore. Position retainer plate over axle housing studs. Install retainer nuts and torque to 30-35 ft-lbs. Start at the bottom nut . 4. Repeat step 1. on the right side. 5. Back off THREADED ADJUSTER ON RIGHT AXLW SHAFT UNTIL INNER FACE OF ADJUSTER IS FLUSH WITH THE INNER FACE OF THE RETAINER PLATE. Slide axle in same as left side and engage the splines in the side gear. 6. Repeat step 3.SET END PLAY: NOTE! Both axles must be off the ground. 1. use a dial indicator mounted to measure end play (not at an angle). Turn the adjuster clockwise until ther is no endplay. Back off counterclockwise four notches to establish .013-.023 end play. Tap the axles back and forth to be sure the end play is correct. Rotate the axle several times to be sure the reading does not change. 2. Remove one retainer plate nut and install the lock. You may need to turn the adjuster slightly to mate it in the notch. Tighten nut to 30-35 ft-lbs and do a final check of the end play.
Is it a limited slip rear end? If it is there are 2 little buttons that can fall out, or part fall out in the center of the third member that the end of the axles bottom against.
