I have a 1971 fury iii 318 and it only goes to second gear. Should I have 3 gears. If so what' could be the problem.

check the throttle valve linkage at the carb...

the slotted lever should be spring loaded forward against the linkage pin...

engine off...  choke held open.. open throttle part way ONE time.. then close.. this should allow the fast idle cam to drop... and the carb is at minimum idle speed..

remove the spring that holds the slotted lever forward.   you should be just able to hit the back end of the slot against the back end of the carb lever pin...

reinstall the spring

Thankyou I will try that. Does that mean I should have 3 gears, I only think that as my 78 chevys have. Just as  extra info, When i got the car it hung for ages in first gear, and kicked down all the time. I did adjust that linkage and that cured it. if I remember it is almost fully forward on the slot. I did not touch the throtle or choke when I did this though. Also I had the car on the post wheels off the ground doing 100k and it still didnt go up to 3rd.

yep, 3 gears for sure.  if you've a small block it's likely a 904 tranny.
