Have 2 Rams. 2003 and 2004. Both Hemi's, with stock alternators. 2003 has a Interstate and 2004 has Yocam both less than a year old. I get the following readings.
Idle no load.
2003- at Batt-13.94 at Alt-13.95
2004- at Batt-14.26 at Alt-14.25
With Headlights on and AC on max.
2003- at Batt-13.40 at Alt-13.47
2004- at Batt-14.28 at Alt-14.36

Which is operating properly? I Had the engine rebuilt in the 2003 and just checking some numbers and thought the alt was a little low. So then i took the reading off my wifes 2004.

do me a favor..

print this chart i put together..  the lower half is the most important...

post your results by number...   1, 2, 3 , 4    i spend 30 minutes cleaning the grounds on one friends car.. increased the charging voltage by 0.5 volts.. went from dim headlights and 14.1 on test 1... to 14.6 on test 1 and bright headlights.. most of the other readings were in the 0.8 to 1.1 range...  and after i cleaned the ground cables that scattered all over the place the car stopped stalling.. headlights got much brighter...  and the radiator cooling fans worked at full speed..

i talked to a fellow with a hemi into jeep install. it was never right.. he must have had 50 grand in it..  if he could not fix it .. i was going to go out.. but i gave him this test.. he never called.. he fixed it..   he described one stud on the firewall with at least a dozen things grounded to it..  i said thats where i would start cleaning at..

fill in the numbers in a reply..

2003

1,___________

2.__________

3.__________

4.__________

2004

1.__________

2._________

3.__________

4.__________

pick up a stainless steel wire tooth brush from the hardware store... 3 to 5 bucks.. and worth it.. the wooden handle versions rather than the import plastic handle versions have thicker stainless steel wire strands.. so they are really good at cleaning...   use distilled water to rinse..  warmed in a new clean styrofoam  or paper coffee cup..

you will need to find the ground location diagrams and illistrations... sometimes there are hidden... if you cannot find the diagrams easily and have higher than 0.04 or 0.02 volt readings.. i might be able to find some diagrams in a day or two...

like hidden under battery trays ... out on the top of the frame rails in front of the core support...

another question...   how did you measure the alternator voltage..

from the case of the alternator to the output terminal...

do some chris crossing of the volt meter probes...

positive battery to negative battery posts...

alternator output to alternator case...

positive battery to alternator output

negative battery to alternator case..

don't forget that there is usually a rather large but not the full size of the battery starter cables wire running over to a relay fuse box under the hood...

be sure to measure with everything turned on..  same as above..

the positive battery POST.. to the threaded stud on that .. or one of the fuse tops..

just print the chart i posted...   run the tests on it... post the results...

problem fixed. 2003 had bad ground. I pulled all the grounds and the positive cables from the truck. Clean all my contact areas, then made new cables. I had some 0 gauge power cable so i cut to legnth and made my own. started with 12.73 at batt.
Under load I now have 14.10 at the batt and 14.15 at the alt post. Thanks. and all the ground readings match your post above.
