plain andsimple i have a 1968 charger i was wondering how many miles i get per gallons city and highway. its a everyday car i was just wondering its a stock 318 2 barrel carb and maybe if anyone has done a test to see what ur cars did please let me kno. and is there anyway to increase mpg b.c i go on a road trip in it please help thanks
First I want to say nice ride. Well, probably you will be getting about 9.5-10.5 mpg on city and around 14-15 mpg on highway. We must consider that the charger is a heavy car. To increase these numbers you could install a efi system, there are some kits out there with resonable prices and they give a lot of benefits over the carb. Or you could go to a junk yard and get later magnum engines parts(heads, rails, injectors etc..) like the cherokee's and install on your 318, it won't cost you much. I'm sorry if you don't plan on installing efi, it's just that I hate carbs.Thank you.
Without installing and EFI set up, the only thing you can do is make sure your car has a good tune up, that the carburetor is in good working condition and properly adjusted. Finally, your driving habits will really affect your mileage.

Change out the rear differential gears to a 2.94 or lower number-that will help you on the highwayi would put in an Edlebrock intake manifold and a 600 cfm or smaller 4 BARREL carburetor that will lower your fuel consumption ( a small amount) while running on the primaries if you keep your foot out of the gas pedalsome people install something to measure the vacuum within the intake and try to operate the gas pedal with enough ease to keep the vacuum up and the mpg's up-you would have to ask others about the vacuum gauge set up-as i have only heard about it and know very little about it.
A stock 318 in a good state of tune will give you alot better mileage than 10 city and 15 highway as posted above. Unless you drive like a mamiac all the time.
Well, I ran a 70 Charger with a 318 and 727 auto in the 70's. Using an aluminum intake and a 600 or 625 cfm carb with headers, I was able to squeak out 22 on the highway. I don't know what rear gears it had. It had the factory electronic ignition and I would set the timing with 2 degrees more advance than factory settings. It also had L60 15's for tires on the back and F70's up front. I'm currently running a 70 Cuda 383 4 speed with the above mentioned 2.94 gears. IF I stay out of the 4 bbl I can get 22 on the highway and 15 in town. You can gain a lot with some taller tires and higher gears. Obviously the good tune up is a must. My Cuda is a daily driver except when the snow flies. They are fun to drive every day, good luck with it.

I averaged (50/50 city and highway) approx 17-18mpg in my 1968 Charger with 318 2bbl, 904 automatic, and 2.76 gears. I was also running 275/60/15 rear tires. To increase mileage, proper tune up - light on the gas pedal
