Just wondering, here; I am building my 318 and I definitely want to do a little head work. I was thinking maybe a small port/polish job and possibly opening the valves to 1.88/1.60.

The Eddie heads are expensive, and this won’t be a street thumper car, I just want it to breathe better. Even cast iron heads from summit are like $350 a piece for basically what I want done to mine.

My question is: Anyone know the ballpark range of a machine shop doing the head work vs. me just buying heads? I’d like to use the originals if at all possible. The 318 is going into a very big car, not a racer, and I’m in CA. Any thoughts are appreciated!

about 50 clean + mag, minor port 225, bigger valve job 200, replace valve guides 80, resurface 60, valves and valve springs 200 etc.

Okay, cool!  That's in the ballpark of $800, which is totally doable, especially considering it's $700 for bare ones.  Thanks a ton, man!

another set of guys pointed me toward the 302 casting for '80s 318s.  i see that they are pretty darn good but i worry about the big combustion chamber.  the fury isn't going to fly down the track, but i don't want 8.4:1 compression, either.

sigh...

the xxxx302 1989-91 318 head is cool, if u can find a set, cuz they are a quench chamber of about 60-61 cc, and the average 318 is around 64cc open chamber! and u are correct about wanting like 9.5. maybe 318 magnum heads
