I'm using 440 source steel oil pan/pickup(1/2")/main stud girdle setup. There seems to be too much clearance between the pickup & pan. How much is too much.
4 cylinders are only half a real motor.

There won't be such a thing as too much clearance with that setup as long as you keep the pickup covered in oil. I run that pan and the 440 Source 3/8" pickup tube at 1/4" off the pan with 10-30 or 10-40 oil.

Well there is the problem the 1/4 " main girdle plate added ....well 1/4". And now it's sitting more like 3/4" up.

Did another test fit. Turns out with the girdle & windage tray & gaskets I've got 1 1/8 th clearance. Wayyy too much. Now I have to weld a 3/4" extension on.
