Hi, I've never separated a trans from a motor before.  I understand the 727 will slide out of the torque converter which will still be attached to the flywheel. Is that a good way to approach this?  Also, what should I be careful to do to avoid breaking anything.  Thanks! Just tryin to get the old 440 on a stand.

pull the engine oil filter.. remove the bolt thats fastens the engine to the bell housing..   reinstall the oil filter. but be sure to put a new one on before starting the engine..

there are 4 torque converter bolts...   those are usually accessed from the opening at the bottom of the bell housing..

once all 4 are free.. push the converter back away from the flex plate..

there are like 5 more bolts from the bell housing side..

the starter also has to come off..

DO NOT LEAVE THE TORQUE converter attached to the engine..   it must slide off with the transmission..  be sure it does not fall out of the transmission..      if it slides forward..   you support it under the hub with one hand.. and spin the converter while pushing it in with the other hand..

it is almost impossible to slide the transmission ONTO a mounted torque converter..    you will usually destroy the front pump and usually the splines in the converter hub and the input shaft..
