What are the advantages and disadvantages of roller camshafts, and how do they compare do "regular" camshafts?

roller cams have rounded lobes and use roller tappets. this in turn induces less wear on the valve train. less friction = more power

If I were a machine, I'd be a lot happier.

Yea the less friction is worth about 5 horse power.
The real power gain is in the lobe design.
However you really have to question the cost for a street car when a solid cam can make similar power for a fraction of the price.

If you follow along with the Project 505 series of engine articles that I've been writing you'll see that when we changed from a flat tappet cam to a roller cam we picked up about 60 hp.

The roller cam allows a lot more duration at higher valve lifts even if the seat duration stays about the same.  Also, you can get a lot more lift with the roller cam since you can run a lot more valve spring pressure.

If you're going racing and need to make serious power then a solid roller cam is the best way to go.
