Did they ever put a 383 4 bbl carburated engine in a factory Satellite?Every time I've seen a Satellite it always had a 318. Can some someone please tell me what the biggest Engine they ever dropped in a Satellite is. I'm only 15 years old and just bought a 70 Satellite. It has a 318 and a 904 tranny. I love the car very much and payed for it ($1000) with all my own money, no help from parents. I had to mow alot of lawns to make the money. Now I want to drop a bigger motor in and I don't have much money so I'll probalby get a 383. What is involved in an engine swap? I need a little help. Please e-mail back at devin70gtx@aol.com

The 440 is the biggest engine that came in any Plymouth or Dodge and they also came in Satellites. Your looking at a lot of work to put a B/RB in your car it will need a k member or a motor mount kit for the big engine and trans for a B/RB engine and you should change the rear end to an 8 3/4" and you should use a larger rad. to keep the big engine cool.

Pssst... 30 some years ago I was told you had to change the K member to put a big block into a small block car. Nope, don't gotta. You DO have to change the k frame if you're putting an 8 into a 6 cylinder car, or change it or make some mods if you're putting a hemi into anything else. Probably the most frustrating part is re-running your wiring and making sure you have a complete engine so you have all the brackets, linkages, big block tranny, etc. Make sure you increase your radiator size so you have enough cooling capacity.

Get a 383. 440s are awesome but rebuilding them is frustrating and expensive. and if you do get a big block make sure you get a center sump oil pan. Front sumps get crushed on the K-Member and rear sumps get in the way of the steering center link

From the factory, the top motor for a 1970 "Satellite" (also "Belvedere") was a "Super Commando" 383 4-bbl (330 hp). If you wanted more motor, you had to step up to a Roadrunner or GTX. You couldn't even get the better 335 hp 383 that came standard in Roadrunners in Satellites.
Specially equipped B-body police cars possibly had bigger motors. But alot of them were full-sized Furys and that's a whole different animal.
Of course during the last 40 years anything could have happened. It's easy to put any B-motor (except Hemis) in any B-body!
Now, as to whether a B-motor (383 or 440) will fit in the car you have with the 318, yes they will. You'll probably also want a 727 trans to go with the larger engine. I don't know why anyone would think a 440 will be more trouble to build than a 383. Actually today the 440s are probably easier to find and won't cost any more than a 383 to build. By the way both 383s and 440s are big blocks, and things like oil pans, valve covers, heads, water pumps, and much more are identical.
