HI, I have a terrible vibration and have gotten so many different answers from guys at the parts stores, I did an engine swap, took out an 318 and replaced it with an 360, but I used the flywheel from the 318.........im being told to change the harmonic balancer because the 360 was an automatic and now its bolted to a four speed......do I need to change the flywheel or the harmonic balancer or both??????Any info would be greatly appreciated.   Thank You.

318's are internally balanced engines, 360's are not. You must use the 360 balancer and a flywheel or converter that is externally balanced for a 360. This is a must have for a 360!  Good Luck---Kansas Badman

Detar, thank you, the next question is there such a thing as a automatic transmission harmonic balancer and a manual transmission harmonic balancer????I've been told both ways,Jegs a race shop told me NO!!!but then I called a mopar dealership and they list an automatic and a manual transmission for a 360.

...............The 360 has the original balancer on it but it was also an automatic...The flywheel is off of the 318.    Can I take the flywheel off and have an machine shop balance it for the 360?  Thank you so much..

First of all, there are two different 360's. The early and late, meaning magnum the late. The harmonic balancers on the early 360's are the same, wheather it is a automatic or manual.  The torque converters are specific between the early and late since the bobweight is different between the two. The 360's, pre-magnum require 19.79 onces of weight on the flywheel, and are available from Mopar Performance.  The 318's are internally balanced, whether they have a steel carnk or not.  So, you could gut the 360 and have the weight REMOVED from the internally balanced flywheel to make it balanced with the 360's harmonic balancer, crank, bobweight of the rings, bearings, connecting rods and pistons. If it were me and the 360 was already together, I would buy the right flywheel and forget the whole mess of rebalancing the whole engine just to fit that internally balanced flywheel to your engine. By the time you tear down the engine, and have it balanced, you would have MORE than what it would cost to buy one.  I know that Mancini Racing sells what you need for $239.95 -P/N P4529110   their number is 1-800-843-2821 or 1-586-790-4100,,, Hope this helps, good luck,,, Steve DeTar

Steve,

I went to summit racing and bought a 360 flywheel, but it is much smaller than the old one,it measures 13&3/16" accross from tooth to tooth and has 130 teeth on it.The old one of course was on the 318 which thanks to you I now know is internaly balanced and wont work on the 360 but it has 142 teeth and measures 14&9/16" accross tooth to tooth. The problem is now that the starter wont even come close to engaging, its approx.11/16" away from the flywheel now.The flywheel I bought has the same part # you gave me p4529110 exept I just paid a little more $259.99 but I was able to go pick it up.but now im stumped again, hope you can help me out, Thank you.     Thomas Waterman.

Is this a TRUCK?  If you have a 130 toother for a 360, you need the smaller bellhousing.  I wish you would have told me you had the 143 toother. Most of those on a small block are used on trucks.  You need a bellhousing, the trans, is it a 3-speed or a 4-speed? Is it a truck 4-speed?  Let me know and what kind of vehicle are you working on. I have a couple of bellhousings.  Steve DeTar

I wish you would have told me that first! You have a couple of options. First you can call summit and tell them they sent you a 130 toother instead of a 143 toother, which is what you need, or you can find a flywheel out of a junkyard that came off of a 360, or you can find a small bell housing that has both of those bolt patterns for trucks.  If I knew before hand you had the big flywheel, we wouldn't have this problem. If you can't find either, you only have one choice, if it's got to be a 360.  You could dissassemble the 360, and take the rotating assembly to your machine shop and have them balance that 318 143 toother to your 360.  Let me know what happens...

Detar,
If you are still out there, this is exactly what happen to me and you solved the problem. The former owner replaced the original 318 w/3spd with a new
360 Magnum w/4spd.

Thanks man!!!
