Ok people I need so advice. I have a 66 383 w/auto, Holley 780, 516 heads. I just bought a timing set, valve springs, lifters, push rods and a 270h Comp Cams cam. I given advice that I need to advance the cam 4 degrees and the timing 10 degrees, with the distributor I am assuming. How do I advance the Cam? Am I understanding correctly that the marks on the lower gear and cam gear will not be lined up? This concept is a new one to me as I thoguht the marks had to be aligned for timing purposes. Any advice?
Thanks.

Your cam should have spec. card with it that will tell you what your cam should be set at. You will need a degree wheel a dial indicator with magnetic base, some check springs a piston stop and a pointer also some instructions! You can get a kit with all you need accept for the shims to go on the timing dowl pin on the end of the cam from Jegs or Summit they also have the shims. If you just put the cam in and go by the marks on the gears you wont be able to properly tune your ride.
PS: You really should get the 452 heads we talked about before!!!

So, let me ask you this, I was looking at the timing marks today. they are aligned straight up and down. Crand at 12:00 and cam at 6:00, is that TDC on #1 like on a GM? Shouldn't the rotor be pointed at the number 1 plug wire on the Distributor cap? This is what I have always heard at least for GM's. I have never heard anything different for Mopar.
Confused!!!!!

So what if the rotor is not pointing to the #1 on the Dist Cap. Does that mean that there are other issues that I need to be concerned about? Or can I just put int he the new cam and align the two marks and call it good. Pull the Dist and reset it to alaign up wit the #1 cylinder?

You will find that mopar distributors fave a blade drive unlike gm's gear you are in or 180 out. When you put the new cam in and install the dist. put the cap on it and then install your plug wires all will be okay.
