If you can, try to find a steel crank out of a 383, it would save you some money. But if you don't have one, you must have the 400 cast crank harmonic balancer, and yes 400's are externally balanced. B&M sell a weighted flex plate you are going to have to purchase, and all your pistons, rings, bearings, 400 crank and harmonic balancer and weighted flex plate are going to have to be balanced. The good deal about the 383 is the pistons are lighter than the 400's. It'll be easier to balance. I hope this is for a automatic transmission. If not, skip on the 400 cast crank and find a steel one from a 383. Have fun'

You can use a steel crank preferably which internal balance but will have to grind the block to clear the counter weights since the 383 skirt on the block is short than a 440. I think the cubic inches changes to 426 or something like that. Good luck.

I have several cast 400 cranks and matching cast crank balancers you can have for free if you pay shipping.im in s fla 34953 the 383 steel would be the way to go as your not changing the stroke or anything else by using the 400 crank in the 383, except the strength which would be less that a steel crank 383 but you may have to line bore. anyhow offers there if ya want a 400 crank and a cast balancer.I got the proper flex plate too if you want it, free

grind the crank not the block for a good bit of weight reduction

400 stronger block than a 440 and also has a larger bore making it a better block by far than any factory 440
