I have a 68 383 2v motor i pulled from a 68 fury, and plan to freshen up and install in my 72 charger.I had plans to go all out with it, but do to unplanned events i can't.so i want to just rering it as the engine is in great shape.I plan to install a edelbrock rpm intake and performer carb.headers my ? is what is the larget amount of lift and duration you can safely run without having to machine the guides and cut seat for dual springs.my engine has open chamber heads.

my rearend has a 3.55 gear and 275/60 r15 tires.I plan to use this as a street car and cruise alot.does anyone know what the average cam specs you can get away with in a stock 383.this engine does have flattop pistons

thanks,Aaron

You can probably get away with .550" lift, but check first before firing up the motor.

Without checking valve to piston clearance, .485 Lift-286 Duration is as wild as you can go. (a Racer Brown SSH-25 cam)

You do not want "as much lift as will fit".  What you should do is find out  what actual compression ratio, carb, gear ratio, torque converter, weight of car, type of cam (hyd, solid, roller...), and usage is.  Then call Comp Cams, tell em what you've got and ask their expert advice.  They will hook you up, and you won't have driveability issues from choosing the wrong cam.
