Manual Lever Shaft Seal 727 TF Trans Question

Guys - I'm not sure I got the right seal or not.  I dropped the valve body out of my trans, removed the shift linkage, and dug out the old seal (it came apart in a million pieces so I could not compare it with the seal I got).  Anyway, I'm looking at the seal and it's way bigger than hole it goes into.  The manual says to hammer the seal in with a 5/16" socket. The seal is hard plastic around the outside and appears to be a softer rubber inside with a small spring around it.  I don't see how hammering it into the hole is going to work.  Plus, I'm trying to do this with the tranny still installed.  I think I'm going to have to drop it down to hammer it in.  Before I do this I need to know if I have the right seal.  I've included pictures of the seal, the package it came in (includes part #), and pictures of the hole that it goes into.  Let me know what you think.  Sorry my camera sucks:

it looks like the right seal. they install from the outside. put the valve body back on. try to find a socket that fits over the shifter shaft and tap it down. there's not a lot of room to swing a hammer, so you may have to drop the crossmember. pack the bottom of the seal with a lite grease so the spring won't pop out.

i have pulled them into the case with a big bolt and washer on the top,.... and a washer and nut on the inside..  tightening it will pull it into the case...

while you have the valve body down...    you might want to change the seal or Oring in the top of the shift shaft.. or do you have to drop the throttle valve shaft.. i think you just have to take the E clip off the inner shaft and then you can pick the seal out....   they are available at every automatic transmission parts supplier..

This is definitely the right seal part number. Barry

I'll try the bolt and washer method.  Thanks!

Well I tried using a bolt and washer to pull the seal inside but all it did was crush the seal.  F-in thing!  I have to find a new seal now and probably drop the trans a little to get it in there (by the hammer 15/16 socket method).  I still do not see how this seal fits in the hole without damaging the seal.

did you miss the point about the flat washer under the bolt head.. or under the nut head??? to spread the load to the outer part of the seal...    you cannot use a smaller bolt to pull the seal in.. you have to push on the outer diameter of the seal with a flat device.. after you center it over the seal bore...

i just called my transmission parts supplier..  they get a buck and a half for the new seals... drop me a PM .. with your address.. i will send you a new one... if you need it.. you don't have to buy them from mopar...
