I have a 74 Dart Swinger, 318, 2 bbl Carter, 74K miles. I found a 88 Diplomat, police package with a 318, 360 heads,4 bbl intake, and a Quadrajet. I've heard this was a factory package. Is this a direct swap? I've read up on the compression ratio drop when 360 heads are put on a 318. Was this cut from the factory this way? If so is it possible with no machining? If this is possible, I was contemplating a little more cam if I do the rebuild; 420 lift, 270 duration. Is this a good fit. My dad is posting this for me I am 15 and this is my first project car. I've gotten good advice from his buddies but they are Chevy nuts and know nothing of the Mopar Magic. Can you help?

Any police motor is a good foundation for a build. I had a 360 with 300,000 miles on it and could not hurt the motor. To increase the compression I would machine the heads .035 thousands and use the thin head gaskets. This will increase the compression about .75 of a point. This is necessary if you plan on installing a larger cam. Doc

it is a factory package. a direct swap. maybe the heads got cut for this package, maybe not. maybe a special piston was used, pop off a head on the 74 and the 88 and inspect/measure height of piston to top of block. cam sounds good, or go with a comp cams modern 340 / 360HP cam of 268/276 duration with .420/.440" lift. use the .025" thick mopar orange head gasket p4120094 . clean everything well and assemble what u have with no machining, a stock small block mopar spring can go to 5300-6100 rpm.

Thanks for all the help. We have the 360 heads ready. We did get a new cam 420/440 with the thin head gaskets. (they were hard to find). The pistons are flat tops. We are almost ready for the rebuild. Here is my question; Can I use a 318 gasket set or do I have to piece together the correct gaskets to put 360 heads on my 318? This is a cam rebuild on my 318 74 block, 360 heads, intake, and exhaust manifolds. Thanks guys for the help.

What are the head gaskets made out of? If they are thin metal stock, then you will need to use a coating such as Copper Coat or something similar. Also, you will have to go back and retorque them after initial break in. If they are thin composition gaskets however, this is not necessary.
