Won't idle and when it does it stalls when coming to a light

Hello,
Stock F body with 318 and 904 tranny. It ran fine till a few weeks ago, sometimes it would start and sometimes it wouldn't. I replaced voltage regulator, ballast resistor, neutral safety switch and starter relay.
Here's what it will do: To start it even when cold you have to hold the gas at rpm to keep it running. Once in gear and on the way it will sometimes stall when cornering or when coming to a light. Sometimes it will not fire up right away and will backfire out the carb. I replaced the air cleaner a few months ago and since I have noticed a whoosh sound when manually operating the throttle. It's still the stock 2 barrel intake and carb.
Going to set the timing tomorrow and adjust the idle screws and hope that solves it. Anything else I should look out for? I'm replacing the coil and ECU since they are the original ones from 76.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated as this has been frustrating the snot out of me.
