i take the pump apart.. i examine the pump gears... scrape marks on the sides or outside of the outer pump gear.. then i look for damage to the pump bore... i have found them with wear marks that looked like a brake drum.. a ridge around the outside... where the pump was run dry...
if there is any damage... you need to count the balls pressed into the center section.. and then replace the whole pump... at least here in los angeles... they are not that expensive for a good used one at the transmission parts supplier... less than 50 bucks usually... some places have rebuild pumps.. that they resurface the housing faces.. cost more..
there is a way to verify the clearances.. but i have forgotten it.. i just grab a fresh pump or pump gears if i see any damage.. i know this does not answer your question.. but i thought you should know..
did you see this article..????

thanks for the info my pump dont look to bad but there is some scrapes on the gear lobes there is none on the out side but i am getting a rebuilt one tommorrow to be on the safe side. also . i have a reverse pattern t/a cheeta valve body which would give me the hardest shifts. i have a 3.8 shift lever but what would be better the 4.2 or 5.0 thanks
