I recently picked up a 72 Chally with a 383 and a 727 Slap Stik. The steering is extremely loose and is very dangerous to drive at highway speeds. How do I tighten the steering to make it safe?

but you have to examine the steering to see which parts are worn... which have play... which are dangerous...
why not start with some or the articles that are already written...

and this

it could be just the alignment...
if could be the steering box..
it could be the lower control arm bushings...

it could be just the alignment...
if could be the steering box..
it could be the lower control arm bushings and strut rod bushings...
it could be the inner and outer tie rod ends along with the idler arm and drag link...
it could be the ball joints .. both upper and lower..
it could also be the K member is loose.. but that is not likely... it could also be the rear springs... if the spring bushings are bad...
best bet... take it to an over 40 year old wheel alignment person.. have him give you an estimate... be sure he drives the car..
some times you can just align it... sometimes you have to replace everything under there.
the first link i posted has like 10 or 11 great suspension articles... that if you take the 5 minutes each to read them... you will know a lot more than when you started.. and might be able to see what's wrong...
without a first hand look at and under the car... there is no one thing that anybody could say to point you in the right direction...
read the articles...
ps ... i don't know how i happened to post twice... but my cat had jumped up and sat on the keyboard... ....

I took your advice and read the articles. I asked a guy in a nearby town who deals almost strictly with older cars as well as a local classics junkyard. Both of them looked at it and said there's a lot of vertical movement with the pitman arm and a couple other parts. They said the gears in the gear box are just loose and to adjust the gear box, then take it to an alignment shop to have it checked out. This spring, I'm having a friend of mine, an auto shop teacher at the local High School, supervise his students on replacing all the bushings during their "Suspension module". Not to worry, they've done it before on other Mopars and they've worked on the instructor's own '70 GTO Judge. Not to mention, he's a Retired Lt. Colonel, U. S. Army. He's old school and he'll keep 'em in line.

Just suspensions has a polygraphite front end kit for the CHALLENGER,I put one on mine and it steers great the kit is around $380 and includes all the front end parts and bushings. It is fairly easy to install just have to do a front end alignment.

I actually have plans to have the local High School do a complete suspension bushing kit from Energy Suspensions, using the polyurethane bushings this comming spring. No worries with it, the auto shop teacher is an Army Lt. Colonel (Ret.) He'll keep 'em in line. He knows how to deal with today's punks. Energy doesn't actually make a full kit. However, I can order enough parts with accurate dimensions to make a complete kit.
