The 833 4-speed originally called for type A automatic trans fluid.  This was later changed to Dexron when it came on the market.  This is why they take 7 pints of oil versus 3-4 pints on other 4-speeds.  The synchro's are designed for ATF and work better with it.  A bulletin was published years ago saying to use gear oil when there were complaints of gear rattle.  I have always used ATF in mine, even for Drag Racing.  Faster shifts can be made with ATF.  You might get away with gear oil in warmer climates, but shifting might be hard in cold climates.
Note: ATF does leak easier with worn seals.
