Can anyone tell me what the actual difference is between a 727 off of a 383 and a 440?
Is it a difference in the bell housing bolt pattern or the flywheel bolt pattern?

Not entirely, some lesser 383 trans' had 3 disc cluth packs and were not programmed in the valve body to shift quite as hard, I always recommend opening the trans up and making sure the cluth drums have 4 friction discs per drum and using a shift kit is always a good idea. If yours has the 3 disc drums replace them with 4 disc drums but be careful different years had slight variances, somewhere around the mid seventies they changed the design of the rear cluth drum and pump reaction housing so be very observant and careful. Good luck and happy Moparing.
