Hi again, got some great info from drmopar on what to do with my 440 to make it run decent until I can put some real money into it.. So now, will the tranny fit? It is the short style with the parking brake mounts - so from what I have read the driveshaft is the only issue, not being a slip yoke, which I am not worried about because I will have to buy or have one made anyway.. What I don't know is if the mounts are different since they are on the tail shaft, and if the park brake mounts will be in the way? It has been a long time since I have worked on one of these cars. If I do have to change out the tail shaft - is there an aftermarket, or do I have to find one? Your advice will help a lot when I go to stuff it in the car here in a couple of weeks - Thanks!

70 viewers to this question, and apparently nobody knows - or doesn't know for sure. There is a lot of information at http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum. Sounds like the park brake is not an issue and I have seen posts where this tranny is installed. I will probably try to install the engine in a couple of weeks, and will post my findings.

i will take a try at it... i have rebuilt several TF727's over the years....
i would say stop by a transmission parts house.... buy the long tail shaft and long tail housing.. they will have lots of them... the cases are what they get the money for...
take your trans apart. that is the only way to change the short part for long.. put in new clutches. bands.. seals... bushings that are worn... think about the bolt in rear sprag... there is an article on that in the tech section...
the torque flight transmissions are not hard to rebuild... other than some kind of tool to depress the clutch drum springs so you can get the pistons out to change the seals.. a snap ring tool to slide into the opening in the bottom or side of the tail housing to open the snap ring so the tail housing can be slid off the rear support bearing..
i just cannot remember if the short tail shaft truck tranny will fit... i take it that you have removed the parking brake drum... backing plate... and various things... but then what will you attach the drive shaft to... its just been too long for me to remember...
have you posted any pictures of the trans online somewhere where you can post a link to it..??????
it might be possible that it would fit.. push button transmissions had a rear drum brake on them... and other mopar transmission have used various types of drive shaft joints... so it might fit.. *** wayne..

Thanks Wayne
I did just take a pic and post it to flickr at this address: http://www.flickr.com/photos/39117655@N04/?donelayout=1 it looks like the link works, but it is my first time using the site.
I'm not quite ready to rebuild the tranny yet, the body has a long, long way to go before going out.. I would like to get the car into a moveable state though (partly to show the wife progress You are right - all of the brake assembly is gone, in fact the bolt hole does not look used. I will definitely keep what you said in mind about rebuilding - I was hoping to do it myself when the time comes. And, I will ask a tranny shop what they have for tail shafts - I wasn't finding anything online. Supposedly it has 38k miles, so I am kind of hoping that with a shift kit, seals, and new fluid I can run it for a while. I kind of like having the fixed yoke if it will fit.. On the other hand I don't know if the slip drive shaft is good in a muscle car? I've had Jeeps for the past several years. Again, I appreciate all advice! Thanks,

hi you can use the tranny you have if you change the output shaft and extention housing. if you have a floor shift, make sure the housing has the two tabs that holds the shifter bracket. the internals will have to be stept up since it probaly has three pin planets and a three disc direct drum. you can even use the five pin planets from the 48re's. check that the output shaft fits the front planet, early shafts had different splines. get a shift kit of your choice and your good to go! one more thing, make sure the throttle linkage is put back on and set up correctly. the tranny won't live very long without it. good luck! rick.
