Hi, I'm a new member - this seems to be one of the best forums out there so I thought I would try it.. I have a 73 Charger project that is a long ways away from driving, but I got a 440 out of a 74 motorhome (supposedly 38k mi) and can't find much good info on what I have.. Can somebody tell me, and let me know if I can get decent power out of it inexpensively.. I'm trying/ hoping to get the engine running decently for a low cost while I fix and build the car. Then I will go back to the engine The block is date stamped 3-10-73, the cast number is 3638830-440-9, the front pad is stamped J440T, the heads are 3769902, and the intake is 3888444-1.. Are the heads good for unleaded? Can I cam it and get decent power? Is it really 220 HP with 380 torque - my 5.7 is better than that! What can/should I do? All advice is welcome!

3769902 are 1974 400/440 cylinder heads. Yes they have hardened seats and can be used with unleaded gas. Are they a good performance head? So, So. The best head to use with hardened factory seats are the 1978 452's. Best flow numbers of all the stock heads when ported and polished. What ever head you use you will need to cut .060 thousands off the head to get the comp. up to about 9.5 to 1. Use the steel or thin head gasket. 282/484 hydraulic cam works great with this comp. ratio. The horse power numbers you are describing are net numbers. Add 20% to get actual numbers at the crank. With the upgrades mentioned along with some headers and an aluminum intake such as an edelbrock torker and a 750 Holley double pumper you can expect horse power in the 425/450hp range. Doc

This 440-9 is a truck verson. The pistons are the culprit. It want matter what you do it will be weak unless pistons are put in it that will bring up the compression ratio. Check the block for core shift. That dash 9 after the 440 means it took the casting company 9 times to get the block acceptial or as they say when they have a hangeover "close enough". The cast iron heads have a recessed quinch area which is notorious for detination. More than likely the valve guides and valve stims are worn so close to completly worn out that to rebuild them to acceptipal use would cost pretty close to a new set of edelbrock heads which have a no detination combustion chamber. High efficency burn chamber. Hardened seats intake and exhaust. Stainless steel valves. And high flow, this is where the power comes from, ports. Get a 770 Holley street avenger, Edelbrock RPM intake, Edelbrock alunimum heads, Hypertetic pistons that "Will match the heads for a 10 to 1 compression ratio", Comp cams 275-High lift cam and lifter set and a true race roller timming set. I know this sounds like way too much money but you will spend more or a lot more trying to get by cheap. Their is no such thing as get by with any thing. Morris b Boaz al.

the heads are good, throw in any cam u want, the best way to get about 10.5:1 is to change the pistons at + .030" cut the heads .015" and use a Mr. Gasket .017" or so thin steel head gasket. -9 is not that bad, what it means is that every day that they poured a batch went -1 =day 1 , -2=day 2 , etc. so slightly going downhill at the foundry but not a big deal. Carter or Edelbrock carbs are more reliable. match exhaust ports to ID of headers for power.

I agree with everything except the edelbrock carbs, Holleys are much more friendly when it comes to repairs and tuning, plus they will out perform anything out there. Doc

a 750 edelbrock or a 750 holley or a 750 henry, properly tuned-the engine will not see a power difference. A CARTER/WEBER/EDELB. is more friendly in my world, I worked at a speed shop for 11 years and the Holley crowd needed a lot more help! I have run Carter carbs for decades without a problem. holley ashtrays needs constant attention.
