I am very new here and need direction. I'm 51 yrs old and I am in the process of restoring my truck. My truck has over 500,000 miles on it, it doesn't smoke and believe it or not its still runing mechanic recommend I do a rebuilt if I am keeping and restoring another words its on borrowed time now. I have a friend who is selling me a 318 engine for $380.00 all complete but with gas prices and all should I keep my slant six and just rebuilt it, will headers give me a little boost? What type of tranny do my truck have now? If I do decide to install 318 what type of tranny do I need? how about the rear end do I change it also. I just want my truck for evryday use and to show it off I am a little heavy on the foot though. If I do decide to keep the slant 6 I want to install an A/C do I need a bigger radiator, which one? I guess does all for now..but I'll be back for more questions I am glad I found this site, looking forward in hearing from you all. God Bless America.

Troquita, I REALLY like the early 80's trucks. 500,000 miles, and you're thinking about replacing the Slant Six? Man if it was me, and the truck was that dependable, I would rebuild it if it needs, and leave it.

As far as adding a 318, it can be done but you'll also need new; engine mounts, transmission, radiator, trans mount, probably a driveshaft, and I am sure there are other little things I am forgetting. Your truck probably has a 904 transmission in it now, which is fine for a daily driver. Headers can give it a little help, but whether or not the small gain by just adding headers is worth it, is something only you can answer. check out; Classic Auto Air, about the A?C. They can answer any of your questions about it.

Some people are like Slinkys; they're not very useful, but fun to watch when pushed down the stairs.

Thank you for your advise , I will do just that, I will have the slant six rebuilt and install headers and check into the classic auto air web page. I saw a green truck like mine on the web and it is beautiful it really looks tuff its lowered with air bags and it has awesome wheels. It really looks like an OG muscle truck.

That is amazing! 500,000 miles! I'm glad you are resto- modding your truck and not retireing it! I too would stick with the slant 6, what a great engine. I guess my '91 D150 with 121,000 miles is just a baby! Post some pictures as you progress.
