when putting new pistons on used rods for a 318 do you have to change the bearings where the rod pins go or is it only done when theres aparent wear and tear?

Have a machine shop resize the rods and install new bolts.
If they are the early floating pin style I would have the machine shop change the pin bushing's and hone them for the new pins that come with your new pistons.

make sure that you need new bushings first. In my machine shop we have found that the 318 usually do not. We put the pistons down flat on the bench and while holding the piston from moving try to move the rod in the oposite direction of the way it nomally moves. In other words you grab the rod with your hand around the beam and the bottom of your hand laying on the bottom of the piston and try to rock it. It will only move slightly if they need replacing.
