904 to 727 Trans Swap

I have a 73 challenger that came with a 904 and I made the mistake of rebuilding the 904 and coupling it to awesome 360 I built the 904 lasted 6 months before shattered it. I just replaced the 904 with a beefed up 727. The tail shaft on the 727 is about 3 inchs longer than the 904. Here is the big qusetion I need answered from my mopar brothers.Can I shorten the driveshaft and change the yoke to a 727 yoke? Is the U Joint for the 727 bigger than the 904 or can I just change the yoke and get the drive shaft shortened. Please help!

Shorten the shaft and have it balanced . The 727 and 904 should have the same u joint just different yoke spline and od size.There are 2 different u joint sizes but yours should be the same. Dom Rinaldi

Hey Guys Im getting a 318 v8 and a 727 Tranny tomorrow. Its going into a Slant 6 Duster Demon with a 904 tranny. Im aware of the possible driveshaft changes and U joint changes but what about transmission mounts? Do I need new transmission mounts and where do i find the mount and where do i find the U joint? HELP!!! Thanx fellow mopar enthusiast!

I'm wonderin why you're wantin to change to the 727? The 904 will live behind pretty much anything you want to put it behind. Just upgrade it to 999 specs as far as the drum and the bands. If you change to the 5 disc drums and the wide bands like the 999, it'll hold up fine and use less horse power to drive resulting in more power to the rear tires. They have run 904s behind Super Stock HEMIS for years. Of course, they are modded way more than I'm talking about here, but a 904 will be fine. They are way stronger than given credit for. Course, if you're dead set on the 727, it'll work, too. Just get ready to get beat by somebody with the same combo and a 904. LOL
