Is this a good engine? I feel like I should go that way instead of the 440 I had planed on.

Depends what your putting the car in.
If you have an original 440 car then I would suggest that is probably the best route, especially if you plan on selling the car in the near future.
408 Small Block? Great package, same horse power as the big 440 but much lighter.
Plus if your installing this in a car that will see some street use the small block will be much friendler as far as fuel economy and handling.
Personally I like the small block, but I am probably the odd man out. Why? I don't get caught up in all the hype of a 440 over a 340 or 360 motor, and yes I have owned all the above, in the end its all in the package.

I was also looking at this engine.  For the money I don't think you can beat it.
