I need to replace the stock carb on my 68 440 mag. I'm looking at the Edelbrock 600cfm #1406. Any better suggestions?

4/04- Bought Edelbrock perf.750cfm #1411- Disregard post.  (Thanks 3404spdvaliant)

Holley 830 chokeless race carb.
Or edelbrock 800.
Either way no less than 750cfm.

What cam and what gear?
Stock to mild=750 I recommend a Holley. If your a lead foot like me=double pumper.

stout to radical=830 and up, repeat of above.

Six-Packs look cool and are actually pretty efficient, the main problem with a Six-Pack is the dual-plane intake design.

As far as tuning, their pretty straight forward, basic Holley stuff.

I think for the money though, a good 750-850 Holley is simpler and would offer similar or better performance (depending on intake, etc.) on a mild 440.

They should make single plane 6 packs. But i am considering going for a Holley 750 double pumper this summer. A question though, would a Holley 750 work on an edelbrock single plane intake?

Appledog, It'll work, depending on the rest of your parts. A single-plane intake is happy at high r.p.m. If your cam shaft is done at 5,500 r.p.m. it's a waste. If your engine is suited for a single plane intake, the 750 probably isn't big enough.

I know ive got a small cam but i dont know what its aspects are. All i know is ive got an edelbrock 1406 on it now and i think its a 600cfm which is way to small, its still drives and behaves normally its just very sluggish. I'm gonna double check its number..

750 double pumper holley is the best for a street driven combo

I am presently using a Edelbrock AVS 650 on my 69 GTX with a 440/auto . I had to re-jet/tune the carb using the supplied tunning chart . It now works well for mild driving but at WOT it is lean. I am now at the edge of the chart and still have a WOT surge so I suspect the carb is just too small for the motor. Other than the limited CFM I think the carb is very well made and very easy to tune. I will be going to a 800 AVS shortly. Save yourself some frustration and go for a larger carb. 750+ CFM will probably work well enough. Just my thoughts.
