Seems like there could be a few things out, and its probably best to start over. Just make sure you are at TDC on #1 cylinder on the comp stroke, and not exht. Remove #1 plug and Hold your thumb over the hole and feel the air push past at TDC, then you will be sure. Forget about how it was and run wires accordingly 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

When your turn the engine over--be it with a socket or with the starter--remomve the number 1 spark plug, and spin the engine over while one of your fingers is pushed against the spark plug hole. When you feel air come out of the hole past your finger, just put your TDC mark on the damper at the Zero mark on your timing mark on the timing chain cover.
If you have the valve covers off, you can also do this by making sure that both the intake and exhaust rocker arms are in the "up" position.
Sometimes you just gotta say...

Exactly. Once you have established that the rest should be easy. That's why its best to start over. Gets rid of the guess work. Just follow the rotation of the rotor (whichever way it rotates while cranking) and install your wires based on the firing order. Let me know how you make out.

BTW, my # 1, is 1st one to the left of the clip nearest the vac adv going counter clockwise, but you could be 180 off which is why its best to start from scratch.
