What stock parts does he plan on using ? Carb and intake ? Does it need to sound stock ? The last 340 I built looked pretty much stock to most people. It had a old LD340 intake with the logo ground off and painted blue, I modified Thermoquad and a set of TTI headers. It made 480hp on the dyno, ported heads, 11:1 compression, roller rockers and a huge solid cam. It sure didnt sound stock.
The car Im building now will looks stock right down to the factory manifolds and idle like a stock 340.
I see no reason he wouldnt be able to make 400+ hp with the stock iron intake, some port matching and a good cam. Headers will help. If the car had a Carter AFB or AVS a Edelbrock AVS 800 with the sticker peeled off will look stock to most people.
Your friend may enjoy the FAST racing series. These cars look and sound 100% stock and run as fast as 10s in the 1/4
