Help me settle a bet...were the hood scoops on 1970 Challenger RT's functional or not...in other words, did they let air into the engine compartment? (The question isn't about the shaker hood but the standard "power bulge" twin scoop hood). On 1971 to 1974 RT or Rallye models, the hood scoops had inserts and were just for looks but 1970 was unique in that the scoops were functional...yes or no?

I have a 70 R/T Challenger and they were definately NOT functional. Quite often people would remove the inserts to allow more fresh air to go into engine compartment.

I have a 70 R/T Challenger, they were not functional on originally. In their day dealer's as well as personal cars had the inserts removed to allow more fresh air into the engine compartment. Back in the 70s we switched hoods for additional breathing with the fiberglass units.

THE SCOOPES ARE NOT FUNCTIONAL FROM FACTORY, NEVER WERE. BUT IF YOU REMOVE THE METAL COVERS INSIDE EACH SCOOP, HELD IN WITH 2 PHILIPS HEAD SCREWS THIS WILL ALLOW AIR TOWARD THE INLET ON THE FACTORY DUAL SNOUT AIR CLEANER. I JUST REDID MY HOOD ON MY 70 R/T AND NOTICED THAT MOPAR BUILT THESES INSERTS WITH THE INTENTION OF THEM BEING OPEN , DUE TO THE FACT THAT EACH ON HAS A DAMN WITH A CHANNEL BUILT IN TO IT TO DEVERT THE WATER TO THE OUTER EDGE OF THE HOOD. TAKE ONE OUT AND HAVE A LOOK. COOL HAA.

Just to add to this conversation, here's wording quoted from a 1970 Dodge Challenger sales brochure regarding the performance hood topic:
"Performance Hood. Baffles in the hood scoops can be removed to permit outside air to rush in."
So, with this in mind, it looks like the factory did have the intension in 1970 to have these scoops to be used as functional of the owner wanted so.
If I'm not mistaken, all the scoops from 1970-1974 had the removeable inserts(baffle) to make them functional. Correct me if I'm wrong. I know on my '72 the inserts are removeable and they do have the afore mentioned dam to divert water located behind the insert.
Cudas on the other hand did not have functional performance hoods. If you remove the scoops on these hoods (At least on the one that I saw.) there is no opening on the hood, the scoop sits on top of the hood where as with Challenger performance hoods, when you remove the scoop, there is an actual hole the scoop sits in.

Everyones right not functional, but like the factory said they could be made to function, and not just on the challenger and cuda. I removed the insert in my cowl induction piece in my 70 383 road runner to let in a little more cool air, this piece if anyone can remember was in the rear of the hood. You could do the same on most of the power pulged hoods during the 60's and 70's.
