1970 1 owner 383 Superbee

Hello,

I went to see a car for sale today and was offered a 1970 Superbee with a 383, blue outside with white striping and  blue bench seats inside. The car is being sold by the original owner. It has around 42,000 miles. It was rarely driven since the 70's. It was restored a few years ago to bring it back to its original state and looks new. I don't know much about this car so I am looking for help on how much it would be worth and comments on if it would be a good one to own...

Has the car been appraised by a reputable appraiser?
If so how much, and how much is the guy asking for the car?  

The car is "on consignment" at a garage specialised in restauring and selling antique cars. They performed the restauration a few years back, mostly cosmetic since the car has never been modified since it was purchased at a dealership less than 20 miles from where it is at the moment. The owner was asking CAN$46,000 but I can get it for $40,000...  

You already told us the restoration is a couple of yrs. old. Honestly I would't pay $40,000.00 Canadian or U.S. for a 383 car. Superbee or not.
Cars oline has a 69 1/2 383 Bee with all the original metal, $33,000.00 asking price, low mileage.
If you are really interested in the bee you are looking at, I would hire an appraiser you trust, not someone the consigner knows, and then make a low ball bid, with the economy the way it is you should be able to pick up a 383 car for no more than $25/$30,000.00 in #2 condition.
Depending on equipment, if everything works, & mileage.

Thank you for the advice. I was going there to see a 1970 Challenger R/T which is what I would like to get if I find one that I can afford :-) I thought the Superbee was nice but the cars they had were not cheap so I was not convinced it was worth the price. Before I do anything I will get an appraisal. As far as I could tell it was perfect inside, outside and underneath. I was told the car was taken apart, repainted and put back together. The original owner passed away during the restauration and his family is selling the car. I will let you know if I make any progress.  

You will find most consigners cars are about 25/30% high, probably because that is their fee.
1970 Challenger R/T, now thats something I would be willing to pay $40,000+ for in good cond.  

The Challenger is scheduled to be finished in February 2009. It is "plum crazy" and black. It has a date correct but not numbers matching engine. Their target price is CAN$70k. It seemed very expensive for a non numbers matching example...  

Wow, why not just buy a brand new Challenger with the 6.1. It will get 20 plus miles to the gallon, run low 13's in the quarter at 107 mph. Comes with a full warranty and has all the comforts of a modern car with the same muscle car presence of a 70's muscle car.
The only thing I would do to the new car would be to install a set of Borlas to give it a little rumble and install a set of Mickey Thompson DOT drag radials on a spare set of rims.
P.S. don't drive it to the dealer with the drag radials on, I think it would void the warranty.  

I am a nostalgic dreaming of the car that I loved as a kid :-) There are several of the new "built in Canada" 2008 Challengers at dealers around Montreal. It's just not the same as the original. I already drive an AUDI S6 with a 10 cylinder 435 HP engine that beats a Porsche 911 and has a exhaust tone only a 10 cylinder can have. A modern car is probably more logical but for the same reason I own a large collection of mechanical watches and clocks I would love to have one of the original muscle cars :-)

I finally purchased a 1971 Challenger R/T with a 383. It is fully restored, all numbers matching and as nice underneath than above and inside. The appraiser rated it an "almost" #1... It will arrive Tuesday :-)  

40 grand would really be on the high side for a 383... Keep in mild the muscle car market is WAY down.
