I am in the process of building a 451 stroker motor for street cruising in my 70 Challenger (I have a keisler 5-speed manual, 3.91 gears, performer RPM, 9.7/1 CR, TTI 1 7/8" headers, ported Iron heads, Speed Demon 750 and yes Power Brakes). I have several questions about potential camshafts to use in this application.

1) I am considering the mopar 284 hydraulic lifter cam (PN 4120235) with 241 degrees @ .50" lift, 68 degree overlap and 108 degree centerline (I love the sound of it). Does anyone have information on how much vacuum it should pull with a 440-451" motor (I have power brakes and would consider a vacuum canister or Vacuum pump if needed).

2) I see that mopar performance has a NEW 284 grind (PN: 5007697) with 241 degree duration, 56 degree overlap and 114 degree centerline, What would this cam be like for street driving, will it have that much more vacuum?? How will the sound of the motor be affected?

3) Would you recommend another cam all together or diferent engine combo? (I want a similar sound to the 284 cam and am not concerned about acheiving maximum horsepower)

Thanks for your input

I would run the lunati voodoo 305 series camsplit lobe fast ramp cam.284 on intake  292 on exhaust .533 lift on int and .552 on exh. duration at 50 is 242 int and 252 on exhaust. I happen to have one ill sell. Its brand new and comes with lifters, and yes its a hyd cam,This cam ramps super fast meaning the valves open and close quicker. This cam behind the keiser would create a permanant grin on your face. $100 if your interested vacuum shouldnt be a problem at all.

Run it's brother the one with wider power band & better throttle response
the MP 284* .528 lift,it's only .500 -.496 after lash.

the .509 is next step up at 292 duration..the .528 has to be mechanical or your looking around 296 degrees duration if its the 318? hydraulic cam .that or im behind the times. I would go for the lunati 305 hyd .533 int .552 exh 242 duration at 50 on int. 252 on exhaust. In a 4 speed car this cam would give good vacuum and ramp faster than any mp camshaft and would be simple and also idle like the .484 but when ya stab the pedal hold on ,yeehawwwww

The lunati you mentioned 242-252 would be marginal at best, would require single plane, would pose problems related to vacume for power brakes and maintaining idle during abrupt stopping.
The MP .528 I mentioned is a solid cam and already has a fast/faster ramp than a fast rate hyd. The .528 installed 4* advance will generally pull around 12 -13 inches of vac.
I would not run power brakes with more than 242 @.050 of duration.

The first 284/484 you talked about is a very nice cam.
I have a friend with a 440 with power brakes and he has had no issue with low vaccum and his is a low compression motor, about 9.0/1.
The second 284/484 with 114 degrees is more for the 383/400 engines.
If you don't mind adjusting valves once a yr. the 284/528 solid is the best cam of all the ones mentioned so far.
The 292/509 does come in the new improved version with 114 degrees lob seperation for improved driving at low end, other wise increased vaccum.
This is a hydraulic cam and with the compression you have and the carb you are going to run this would be the max. cam I would recommend.
If you do go with the large hydraulic and your not 100% satisfied, you can always install Roades Lifters, they claim a 25% increase in vaccum at idle and they really do improve the bottom end torque of your motor. The only draw back with these lifters is they clatter at low rpm. I used the reg 509 in a 440 and it sounded a lot like a solid lift motor when it was idling.
