I have a 68 charger with a 440. the motor has edy heads and 10 to 1 compression with a good street roller cam from hughes engines. for cooling it has high flow water pump and aluminum housing mechanical fan and clutch with shroud, new 160 thermostat and a be cool rad. it is not the one that you have to move the battery. I recently had to rebuild the engine do to a camshaft failure will I had it apart I decked the block to bring the pistons to zero deck. I went with a roller cam but other than that it is the same as it was. the car run around 180 cursing 20 digress higher than the thermostat and when idling it quickly gets hot the fan seems to be working right. I have flushed the rad and block and even added some water wetter. I am thinking of backing off on the timing but the car runs fine with no detonation. I am getting pretty frustrated I spent a lot of money on the higher parts so this wouldn't happen Anybody have any suggestions

The correct t-stat for that motor is 195. Try a 180, if that does'nt work, try the 195. This motor will run 200 deg. and not hurt it. The 160 is staying open and causing the overheating. I had the same problem.

It is staying open all the time when the motor is over the t-stat temp. You need to get worried if it gets to 220. Make sure you have a good temp guage.
