I'm looking for advise for building a stock 400 *** Chrysler into a street/strip configuration. I want a motor that is reliable, has a good idle, and  sounds somewhat radical.I do have vacume asist brakes.
I have bought a few parts at this time; an Edelbrock preformer intake manifold and a set of 452 casting heads that have been professionally ported. The heads flow 245 cfm at .500 intake and 212 cfm at .500 exhaust. Valve sizes are 2.08 and 1.75 . The TRW srings can handle as much as .590 lift. The heads have been milled .010.
I need to know what the best hydraulic cam choices would be? Also what needs to be done to have a compression of 10/1.
The head combustion chambers are 86cc.
Last, what size Holly will I need?  Thanks

Hi,
Well, the Performer is a bit mild for street/strip duty with ported heads,  decent cam and so on. I would rather see a Perf. RPM as it's bottom end torque disadvantage to the Perf. occurs at an rpm so low that if you have even a mild 11" converter behind a good 'B' the Ed. RPM will have the advantage throughout your entire powerband. The RPM's extra usable 1,000 rpm or so up top will work a lot better with your ported heads and good valve springs which will allow you to run the kind of cam that will take advantage of your investment in headwork. If you are stuck with the Perf., run a 1" spacer to give a bit more plenum volume and straighten out the airflow with at least a 750 to feed it. Use 1-7/8" headers and min. 2-1/2" exh. w/ good muffs and H or X crossover. For your combo, I like Comp. Cams XE275HL. It offers good valve action, but should be able to support vac. accessories with sharp tuning. This cam moves the  valves .525" w/275 adv. duration and 231 deg. @ .050" on the intake and 287 deg. adv., 237 deg. @ .050 exh. Run 1.6 rockers for a nice, fat .560" lift to take advantage of your porting and springs. A well-tuned 850 Holley would work well also, but no less than a 750.

On the comp. w/ a 4.375" bore, zero deck flat-top, w/std. F.P. 4.41"x.039" gskt., I come up with about 9.7-1. You will need valve clr. pockets on the pistons which will drop it further, so you might look at thinner MP gskts. or a bit of head milling. Check it out-gotta head over to the girlfriends-L8R.

How is it going to sound radical but have a good idle ?

The 400 can be made to run very well. It just needs compression, heads and cam like any other motor.

To pick cam size you need to decide on what you plan on running for gears/tires and what you want your operating range to be, how much the car weighs

The Performer intake is some what of a low RPM intake and wouldnt run a cam bigger then 225* @.050".  The Performer RPM would be better.
