Was the truck a power brake unit and are you still using the booster?

Roll control probably wont hold you on the line. They are primarily used to do a burn out in the bleach box.  I am sorry to say you can install a transbrake or use your foot brake.
My brother has a small block chevy, supercharged in a 55 chevy truck. I raced it last year and the first thing i found was that the roll control would not hold the truck on the line. After a couple of tries i resorted to the foot brake.  As far as the pedal being hard not sure. Did you convert from disc breaks. Mushy can mean to small a piston in the master cylinder. A hard pedal may mean to small a piston which is generating too much line pressure (that is a guess so dont put to much faith in it).
