i am looking at a 69 GTX. but im not sure if its a real GTX or a clone. i noticed that a satellite looks similar, and was wondering if there would be any obvious differences, the car is about six hours away from me so just going to look at it is kinda hard. but i did get quite a few pictures. my next step is to call him and get the vin #. so if any one can help me as far as spotting any obvious differences or point me in the direction of decoding the vin. well i would greatly appreciate it...thanks

95Dak you can tell whether or not a car is a GTX by the VIN;
In 1969, the Body-type designations were as such: RS21 and RS23. RS21 is a two-door post car, and RS23 is a hardtop, which is what a GTX would be.
The next letter will tell you what kind of engine it should have. The letter H means 383 four barrel, J means 426 Hemi, L means 440 four barrel, and M means 440 Six Pack.
The sixth digit shows the year of the car, which in this case should be a 9;
The next letter will tell you where the car was built. A is the Lynch Road plant, E was Los Angeles, and G was St. Louis.
The numbers after that are the sequential build numbers of the car.

So looking at your car, the serial number should start RS23l. To be REALLY safe, in case someone has changed the serial number (I know, I know, NO ONE would ever do that....) Check on the back side of the radiator support, In the trunk drip rail, and under the package tray cover, and you should have the same numbers, or a portion thereof, stamped in those locations as well. This is a little different for '68's, the sequence and serial numbers are not there, they used the build number off the fender tag.
