I needed a forged crank for a 440 I'm building up.  A local machine shop had one that somebody dropped off and never picked up. So I got it for a $100.00. I'm curious if any of you out there have any forged crank reference numbers or e-z id guides.  I have looked all over this unit and have found only one set of numbers, can't make out the whole number but it appears to end with "388"  or something similar.  On the other end is some lettered stamping. The lettering says,
"VELASCO   HC    CD    3.745   V1462"  All dimensions appear to be standard or damn close to standard.  There is no evidence it has ever been installed  and all oil hole from what I know appear to be professionally chamfered.  I'm asking because my next move is what harmonic balancer should I get and rods ( I have a set of  six pack rods) but I've heard they're too heavy. Oh yeh it's a six bolt flange..........I already thought that it could be a Hemi crank.

Is the flywheel flange drilled for 6 or 8 bolts? hemis were 8-bolt cranks.

If the dimensions are standard, stroke is correct, and it looks like a factory forged crank, I'd magnaflux it and check it for straightness then balance it internally for your rods (yes, they're heavy but tough)and go from there.  

Maybe restate the question.  I have a BB crank shaft.  I know it is a forged unit and I know it has a 6 bolt flange.  How can I tell whether it is an external balance unit or internal.  I DO NOT have the harmonic balancer.  I have a set of six pack rods but I am trying to figure out what type crank this is so that I know how to approach assm. and balancing.
