new guy could use some advise 73 Satellite 440

Hello folks, I,m a 53 year old beginner at drag racing.  Did it a little when I was 18, but that was so long ago....  Anyway, took the Satelite  to the drags last Friday and turned 14.45 (best time) at 95 mph. (did beat two Mustangs though and that was fun ) Is this what I should expect from a 1977 Chry Newyorker 440 engine, 727 trans, 391 posi rear, headers, Edelbroch manifold with Holley 4 barrel carb??  Previous owner claims the car normally does 13.5  I found myself shifting into 3rd for the last 150 yards of the quarter mile and I'm wondering if the 29" Mickey Thompson "Street pro's" are too tall??  Any and all thoughts appreciated.

If your engine is a stock 440 from a 77 New Yorker and the Satellite isn't lightened, you're doing ok. That's a very low compression engine with open chamber heads and the pistons very low in the bore at tdc. With a stock cam I assume you're shifting at around 5800-6000? 4.10 gears might be better. I generally like to go thru the traps 2-300 rpm higher than my shift points.

Oops,  I forgot to mention previous owner did put in a mild "roller cam".  The interior has been stripped and a cage welded in.  Otherwise, I suspect the weight to be typical.
When we ran we were shifting at 4800- 5000.  Didn't "seem" to be pulling as strong at the higher RPMs.  We were also a little afraid to wind it up higher than 5000.

Even with a stock bottom end, 5500-6000 rpm shouldn't be a problem. If the cam quits pulling before that though it makes sense to shift earlier.

If you want to improve power, I'd change the pistons when you freshen the engine. Compression is low in those late 440s and increasing compression will give you the best improvement for the money. Otherwise, I'd say it runs pretty good for a 440 in a somewhat heavy car. If the previous owner claims better e.t.s I'd ask him how he ran it and where. If your track is higher elevation and hotter temp it'll run slower. Shouldn't be off by a full second though.

I had the year of the doner car wrong.  The engine came from a 1968 New Yorker.

That's a higher compression engine, it should definately run the 13s the previous owner claimed. I'd check to make sure it's running properly (fuel/spark/etc.) make sure you don't have a dead cylinder or something. hopefully nothing is wrong internally but a compression check would tell you.

14s is strong, but that combo should run stronger. What carb, ign system are you running?

It all sounds like your shooting in the dark, who knows how many miles are on your 68 440? A friend of mine had a mid 14 second 440 satellite.
After tearing it down we discovered why it ran the times it did.
Pulled the cam out to upgrade to a 484 lift, the cam bearings fell out when we pulled the cam.
He was fortunate enough that a fresh rebuild corrected the wear and tear his 68 440 had seen over the yrs.
The car now runs 12.70's and is street driven with the following upgrades.  
484 cam, headers, 3500 converter, 28" slicks, 750 d.p., torker intake, 4.10 gears.  
This is a great combination and easy on gas,
Our other 67 Satellite runs almost identical numbers with a 360 small block combo and gets near 20 mpg.
Best e.t. 12.75 at 108 mph., but thats another story.

Make that a 12.67 best for the 360 and 12.66 for the 440.
