I have no problem with letting my grandson ride in the back seat of any of our cars in a car seat with just lap belts. Graco makes really good car seats.

Some people are like Slinkys; they're not very useful, but fun to watch when pushed down the stairs.

When my son was in a car seat (just a couple of years ago), we bought one of the Simpson racing car seats. Though originally purchased for both safety and the "cool" factor, it turned out to work very well. It has a provision for the lap belt to hold it in the car but has its own shoulder belts for the child.

we used it in several A and B bodies and if fit fine and seemed secure. While a child seat held in by a lap belt likely won't be as secure as the newer "latch" system or one that is held in by a shoulder belt, I certainly think it's safe and wouldn't hesitate to let my child ride with me.

remember, our cars have much more metal around them than new ones, plus those of us driving older cars are generally more cautious than most, so don't consider it a real safety issue.

good luck and have fun cruising with the kid(s)!
