ok... so i'm having a bit of a dilema... which is probably just due to my ignorance on engine building (im new so be gentle)

i own a '74 charger that i'm getting ready to rebuild and ive decided to keep the 318 and just work with that... for now

the issue - recently i picked up an issue of M.M. mag and read an article titled "cheap power"... they mentioned the idea of putting a 440 crank in a 400 block for those working with big-blocks... MY question is... would it be possible to put a 360 crank in my 318? what about stroker kits... can i go bigger?? what kinda of special machining (if any) would i be expecting to have done to upgrade to the larger crank???

if anyone can give me some input it'd be greatly appreciated

Hi firedrake
I stroked my 318 to 390 lunati voodoo cam weiand action+ manifold 600cfm Holley 1.6 roller rockers. used the original heads port matched them and opened up the runners polished the exhaust ports. 360 inlet valves didn't touch the exhaust valves.
Have since replaced the weiand with mopar perf tripple manifold and 6 pac demon carbs.
not after high rpm's or massive hp.
the fury is my daily driver and I do some big trips in it.
2.73 diff 904 trans cruises 65mph@2000rpm
dyno before 6 pac
@2000rpm 156hp..410ft lbs torque.
@3200rpm 227.9hp...374 ft lbs torque.
really depends on what you want your engine for. Mines a driver so I'm happy with it, although I am going to put some headers on it. at the moment just running twin pipes(no balance pipe).
I will re dyno with the 6 pac after fitting headers.
If I want more hp I would chuck some performce heads at it. but that will never happen.

I read both blogs about a rebuild 318 and I got a 1993 dodge ram pick up with a 318 in it. I was wondering what can be done to it to add more power and sound off at a red light when I pull off. Some people told me to add a 280 cam and it would talk to me. I dont really know a lot about mopar this is only the second dodge vechicle I had the frist was a 95 dodge neon stock with a 6 banger now i got this truck and i want it to sound mean and have power to hall butt when i fell like running all the gas in the truck out lol so will some one please help me in learning more about a 318 and what to do to build it. Oh yeah one more thing to ask if any one can help me please do so i am stuck and i want to learn more about mopar thanks.

firedrake2k Yes you can. I have a setup that works very well. Email me, Mike at MRLPerformance@peoplepc.com and I will let you in on all the details. Its cheap and works great. What you get is basicly a Mopar 350, kind of like the new 5.7L Hemi. It comes out to the same bore and stroke as the Hemi.

thanks for the tips guys

as for your question mopar1nz...

i want somethin that i can take out cruisin on weekends as well as the occasional get around... pump gas with descent milage (dont have to fill up every other block)... but with enough power to take to the strip every now and then and be able to compete

i wanna put magnum heads on it... what kind of cam should i be looking for? do i need to do any extra machining for this?? what about the cylinders??? any recomend for over boring (.010 - .040... more)????

i have some ideas but dont know if theyll work

i appreciate the help... thanks a lot

you can get 400 hp out of a 318 if you put a nice cam in, make shure your compression is at least 9.5:1(either zero deck block or shave down the heads) and have a nice intake and carb, and of course headers. you will be able to do all of this for less than $1000 and it will last as long as you want it to with proper maintence.

also look at this years dyno challenge. they have some stroker kits on there.
