i have a stock 86 318 2barrel. i would like to get about 250 or so out of it. like most people im on a tight budget. im going to put headers and dual exhaust on it but i have that figured out. will a 600cfm holly and the weiand intake make a good combo? and what about a cam? it will only be on the street so it needs to be street drivable. what kind of cam should i use? i have looked at summit cams because theyre cheap. are they reliable? will this achieve my goal of at least 250 hp or will i have to change the heads too? i would like to avoid that.

Yes you can get 250hp without changing the heads. If you go with the Summit cam, go for the bigger one, 6901. Get the kit w/lifters. You cant beat the price. And yes they are good cams, they are made by Crane Cams. You really should put new springs on also. And its not that hard to due with the heads on. Plus if its a high milage engine, you probably need new valve seals anyway. Get it done all at the same time, saves time and money. A good spring would be Comps 901-16.You will need new pushrods because thats a roller cam you have in there now(if its stock) and the pushrods will be to short. You will need Summit G6408 pushrods. But be warned, if you dont use a good additive in the oil, the cam will not last. Most cam companies make it and Hughes engines has a good one. There is no Zinc left in todays oils and a flat tappet cam MUST have it to survive.

But if you want to go a little bit further, pop the heads off and have a good valve job done and a 30* backcut on all the valves. Then you can also do a little bit of clean up on the ports. But with headers and a 4bbl intake witht he cam swap, 250hp is do-able.

what i want to know is if u are starting out with a roller why would u go to a flat tappet ? Just get roller reground to better spec or new step up roller from hughes or somebody.   if its not roller one things for sure the block is provisioned for roller lifter spider bosses yet still oils though the head.could snag roller set outa junk yard magnum then buy rollercam. it can be cheap only if just buying cam and springs w/junkyard roller lifters+ spider.
age is no lock on brillance
