I am trying to mate a 4 speed to a 440. I want to change the bell housing that came with the transmision (was aluminium) to a 44o scatter shield. Unfourtunatly I noticed that right bellow the output shaft of the 4 speed is a inch wide stud that is sticking out of the otherwise flat surface. The scatter shield though has no openings for this stud.

Here is the question:
The stud can move. we can push it in to make it flush with the front of the 4 speed, we just don't know if that is a good or a bad thing! HELP!

the shaft still turns so we are going ahead with it. If anyone know s what this stud is or what it does it would be greatly apreciated.

I think the stud you are referring to, is the Counter shaft (arbor). It's purpose is to keep the Contershaft gears in place. This should not move freely in and out of the case! It sounds like the case or the shaft may be worn. I would call Passon Performance, 570/401-8949, or Brewer's (937/698-7109. Both of these companies specialize in Mopar Four speeds, and should be able to help you.
